Marvel Bites (9/17/15) — First Look at “Jessica Jones”, New “Luke Cage” Casting, and more!

“Gambit” Director Leaves Project

After the recent announcement that Lea Seydoux would be the female lead in the standalone X-Men movie, it was reported that the director originally brought on to the project, Rupert Wyatt, has exited due to script changes and budget issues. The title role is still held for Channing Tatum, but the scheduling is still up in the air. The film will have to find a new director before they can even start shooting, which was scheduled to begin sometime around this month.

“Gambit” is scheduled to premiere on October 9th, 2016.

New Stills from Netflix’s “Jessica Jones”

The official Twitter page for the new series, premiering November 20th, posted a new set of photos that show a glimpse at the new characters being introduced to the Marvel Entertainment world. The show is centered on Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, a former superhero with PTSD who opens a detective agency dealing with people with “special abilities”. “Jessica Jones” will also include David Tennant as Kilgrave, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Rachael Taylor as Trish “Patsy” Walker, and Carrie-Ann Moss as Harper.

Confusion with “Fantastic Four” Sequel

Despite poor reviews and low box office money, writer and producer of “Fantastic Four” Simon Kinberg says he’s trying to make the sequel work. The movie had reported problems on set with the director, Josh Trank, and didn’t open to as big of an audience as 20th Century Fox expected, which led to Trank lashing out on Twitter. Even one of the movie’s biggest stars, Kate Mara, has admitted she hasn’t seen it yet. Mara says she had a “good time” filming, and didn’t predict what the future of the movie was, stating, “It was a tricky shoot, but you know…when you know when you’re shooting it that a film isn’t going to be what you want it to be? That was not the case at all.” Josh Trank reportedly did not want to cast Kate Mara as the Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, but Mara says that she would be willing to return to a sequel, saying, “That’s the thing that makes me most bummed because we have no idea if we’ll ever make another one.”

“Fantastic Four 2” has a scheduled release date of June 2nd, 2017.

“Luke Cage” Gets New Cast Member

Alfre Woodard has announced that she will be starring as Mariah Dillard, cousin to recently-casted Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, a Harlem politician who is looking for change on the streets she grew up on. Turmoil is introduced to her political and personal life after Luke Cage becomes a Harlem hero and Cottonmouth causes nefarious acts.

“Luke Cage” has no set premiere date yet.

“Captain Marvel” Casting Rumors

Marvel is reportedly considering Rebecca Ferguson of “Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation” to play the intergalactic superheroine, whose solo movie comes out November 2nd, 2018. While that date seems worlds away, it is also speculated that Carol Danvers could appear in another MCU film, such as “Guardians of the Galaxy 2” and the less-likey “Captain America: Civil War”. Other casting options have included WWE wrestler Rhonda Rousey, “Mad Max: Fury Road” badass Charlize Theron, and “Edge of Tomorrow” star Emily Blunt, though no official news has been announced yet.

“Deadpool” Set Photo Released

Ryan Reynolds tweeted a picture of himself and costar Brianna Hildebrand as Deadpool and Negasonic Teenage Warhead on the set of “Deadpool”, out February 12th. When Will the “X-Men: Apocalypse” Trailer Be Released?

New rumors suggest that “The Martian”, out October 2nd, might have a small easter egg for Marvel fans–the highly anticipated “X-Men: Apocalypse” trailer. The rumor has not been confirmed and does not seem likely, as the latest X-Men installment does not come to theaters until May 27th, 2016. If the rumor is true, fans will likely get to see the trailer online on or around the same day, October 2nd. A trailer was released during San Diego Comic Con this year, but not much else has been released on the subject.

Red Wolf Gets His Own Comic

Starting in December, following the reset of the comic publishing line, Red Wolf will have his moment in the spotlight with a role as the titular hero in “Red Wolf #1”. Red Wolf was first introduced in Avengers #80 in 1970 under the alias William Talltrees. He later got his own western themed series in 1972 with nine issues. This is Red Wolf’s first go-around since 1972, but the story will be set in the same area, the Old West. Of the setting, the editor, Jake Thomas, says, “We don’t have a lot of characters who appear in the Southwest,” Though he’ll be connected to the Marvel world at large, “He’s going to be a little bit of a man apart out there.” Red Wolf will live in New Mexico and has been compared to what Daredevil is to Hell’s Kitchen. The story has Nathan Edmonson as a writer and Jeffrey Veregge as an artist, and both have the same heritage as Red Wolf. The character will have his own backstory, origins, and powers than previous incarnations.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” Director James Gunn Answers Fan Questions

James Gunn took to Twitter to reply to fan questions about “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2” and how it differs from its predecessor. Gunn also answered questions about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if he has any favorite characters from his movie. The questions and anwers are as follows:

@bakes: of the GOTG, who would be the worst roomate?

James Gunn: Groot or Drax. Probably Drax. He snores and is not very clean.

@CAvvaru: of all the gotg characters, which one is your favorite?

JG: I’ve never related to any character in my life as much as I do to Rocket. It’s hard to choose another.

@hulkbuster: not counting gotg, what is your favorite Marvel movie?

JG: Iron Man

@TDSpidey616: Will your brother Sean Gunn be performing Rocket on set in GotGVol2 like the first one?

JG: Yes, as well as the role of Kraglin.

@MadMovieNews: Do you work closely with Tyler Bates on the original score?

JG: Very closely. We write music beforehand, and we play it on set while we shoot the scenes. He’s writing now!

@cine_ypalomitas: what do you think about what Steven Spielberg recently said about superhero movies?

JG: That they’ll eventually die out? He could be right, but who knows. But, btw, I don’t think of GotG as a superhero movie.

@deena7202: which actor, not part of the Marvel universe yet, would you like to add to Guardians (or any future films) and why?

JG: I really want to tell you, but the Marvel hitmen would be knocking on your door any second if I did…

@FernanAyuso: why did you put Howard the duck in GotG? Brilliant move but the least thing anyone expected.

JG: Because I wanted to give people the last thing they expected?

@LadySonya00: Was that Rocket escaping at the end of Age of Ultron?

JG: Rocket is not in Age of Ultron.

@petefaux88: which GOTG actor do you have the closest relationship with? (Not including Rooker)

JG: After Rooker, my brother @seangunn.

@spaceRavager: Laura Haddock appeared in Captain America: first avenger and Guardians of the galaxy. Is there some sort of connection???

JG: No. I didn’t know she was in that movie when I hired her (I still would have hired her by the way).

@taaaamas: do you feel any extra pressure after the success of #GotG for #GotGvol2

I feel way LESS pressure. I don’t wake up at 3 am panicked I’m dedicating my life to something no one will ever see.

@swimethan: how does it feel like when marvel asked you to direct GOTG?

JG: I felt like one of those early winners on American Idol with confetti falling on my head & big music playing & tears

@Thetio10: How many new characters you would like to take on GotGVol2?

Not too many, that’s for sure! I want all of our characters to get MORE personal time than they did in the 1st film.

@MuseumGuyScott: Don’t suppose @JamesGunn is taking any suggestions for #GuardiansoftheGalaxy2 Awesome Mix Volume #2?

JG: James Gunn is essentially already done choosing songs for Awesome Mix Volume 2.

@uncannyinhumans: will there be a new female member of the guardians in volume 2?

JG: As I’ve said many times it’s one of my goals to get a higher % of female heroes (and villains) out there. So MAYBE.

@Holmster79: I think we may see Hulk in Guardians 2, but I know you couldn’t possibly comment Mr Gunn.

JG:I will comment on it now (as I’ve done before) – there is zero chance you will see Hulk in GotGVol2.

@ethPS: do you have any particular songs you’d like to hear in Awesome Mix Vol. 2?

JG: Yes, I have 12. And we are currently getting all the rights.

@Holmster79: Star Lord vs Daredevil vs Rocket vs Punisher would be absolutely incredible!

JG: I think Rocket and Star-Lord would kill those other two in less than a second.

@KarateClement: was you surprised guardians of the Galaxy was a big hit for a comic series that wasn’t really known back then?

JG: You never know what’s going to happen, but I had a good feeling about it from the beginning.

@misplacedthings: retrospectively, would you change anything in #GOTG?
JG: Lots of things, yes.

@YassinLNL: Which characters would you really like to have in GOTGV2 but can’t?
JG: Rom Spaceknight. Popeye. Snake Plissken. And Bat-Mite of course.

New Marvel Deal May Move Filming Locations

Filming costs are noticably cheaper in Australia than in America, and with Disney just wrapping up with “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” on the Gold Coast, Marvel is close to doing the same thing. “Thor: Ragnarok” and “Captain Marvel” are rumored to be filmed on the same soundstage as “Pirates”, and for less money. Neither film has a director attached to it, so nothing is set in stone quite yet.

Larry King’s Interview with Stan Lee

The king of comics himself, Stan Lee, sat down with talk show legend Larry King yesterday to discuss his long history with the movie business. In the interview, Lee was asked which actor he bonded with the most, and his answer was fan-favorite Chris Evans, saying “Chris, the fellow who plays Captain America. He was The Human Torch… and then they made him Captain America. He’s the greatest guy! But I love them all.” Stan Lee also revealed what his favorite cameo he’s filmed is, to which he replied, “X-Men Apocalypse. This cameo is different than any I have ever done before, because I did it with another person who is very important to me. I can’t tell you more than that! The whole world is now saying […] ‘Who could possibly be that important to Stan?!’ This is gonna become the biggest talking point throughout the country!”

Is The Hulk in “Civil War”?

Bruce Banner flew to an unknown location at the conclusion of “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, and not much has been said about the future of the character. But according to Mark Ruffalo, Banner was originally scripted to appear in the newest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Captain America: Civil War”. In an interview with BadTaste, Ruffalo stated, “The reason is too great to be revealed in this movie (Civil War). I was in the script but then they removed my character. They don’t want to reveal where is he and why. I don’t even know if Hulk will be back soon.”

“Civil War” just wrapped filming and will hit theaters on May 6th, 2016
